South Korea's first female pilot and aviation independence activist Kwon Ki-ok was born in Pyongyang in 1901. At the age of 17, she saw the aerobatics of American Art Smith and dreamed of becoming an aviator.She joined the secret organization Songjukhoe and started the independence movement. She raised the Korean flag and shouted "Hooray!" during the March 1 Movement, but was captured by Japanese police.
