And as people migrated from the east, they found a plain in the land of Shinar and settled there. And they said to one another, ‘Come, let us make bricks, and burn them thoroughly.’ And they had brick for stone, and bitumen for mortar. Then they said, ‘Come, let us build ourselves a city and a tower with its top in the heavens, and let us make a name for ourselves, lest we be dispersed over the face of the whole earth.’ And the Lord came down to see the city and the tower, which the children of man had built. And the Lord said, ‘Behold, they are one people, and they have all one language, and this is only the beginning of what they will do. And nothing that they propose to do will now be impossible for them. Come, let us go down and there confuse their language, so that they may not understand one another’s speech.’ So the Lord dispersed them from there over the face of all the earth, and they left off building the city. Therefore its name was called Babel, because there the Lord confused the language of all the earth. And from there the Lord dispersed them over the face of all the earth. Responsorial Psalm Ps 33(32):10-11. 12-13. 14-15. ℟12b Blessed the people the Lord has chosen as his heritage. The Lord frustrates the designs of the nations; he defeats the plans of the peoples. The designs of the Lord stand for ever, the plans of his heart from age to age. Blessed the people the Lord has chosen as his heritage. Blessed the nation whose God is the Lord, the people he has chosen as his heritage. From the heavens the Lord looks forth; he sees the whole human race. Blessed the people the Lord has chosen as his heritage. From the place where he dwells he gazes on all the dwellers on the earth, he who shapes the hearts of them all, and considers all their deeds. Blessed the people the Lord has chosen as his heritage. Gospel Acclamation John 15:15b Alleluia, alleluia. I have called you friends, says the Lord, for all that I have heard from my Father I have made known to you. Alleluia. Gospel Mark 8:34-9:1 At that time: Calling the crowd to him with his disciples, Jesus said to them, ‘If anyone would come after me, let him deny himself and take up his cross and follow me. For whoever would save his life will lose it, but whoever loses his life for my sake and the gospel’s will save it. For what does it profit a man to gain the whole world and forfeit his soul? For what can a man give in return for his soul? For whoever is ashamed of me and of my words in this adulterous and sinful generation, of him will the Son of Man also be ashamed when he comes in the glory of his Father with the holy angels.’ And he said to them, ‘Truly, I say to you, there are some standing here who will not taste death until they see the kingdom of God after it has come with power.’ Gospel of the Lord
