Today's Catholic Mass Reading and Gospel Reflection - October 26, 2025
True Greatness in Humility 1st Reading - Sir 35:12-14, 16-18 2nd Reading - 2 Tim 4:6-8, 16-18 Gospel - Lk 18:9-14 In the first reading, Sirach reminds us that God shows no partiality but listens to the cries of the humble and the oppressed. The Lord does not ignore the prayers of the poor or the one who serves Him with a sincere heart. True justice comes from God, who sees beyond appearances and rewards those who act with integrity. This passage reminds us that our prayers are most powerful when they come from humility and faith. In the second reading, Paul reflects on his life as one poured out for God, confident that a crown of righteousness awaits him. He acknowledges his struggles and the times when others abandoned him, yet he stands firm knowing the Lord has been his strength. His faith shows that perseverance and trust in God bring eternal reward. Paul’s life becomes a powerful example of endurance and faithfulness to God’s mission. In the Gospel, Jesus tells the parable of the Pharisee and the tax collector, revealing the heart of true prayer. The Pharisee boasts of his righteousness, while the tax collector humbly admits his sinfulness before God. Jesus teaches that it is the humble, not the proud, who go home justified. This parable reminds us that God values sincerity and contrition over self-righteousness and pride. Together, the readings teach that God looks not at our status or accomplishments, but at the humility of our hearts. He exalts those who lower themselves and fills the faithful with His strength. True greatness lies in acknowledging our dependence on God and living with humility and perseverance. When we let go of pride, we make room for God’s mercy to transform us. Today, I will approach God with a humble heart, recognizing my need for His mercy and grace. I will resist the temptation to compare myself with others and instead focus on growing in faith and sincerity. I will pray not to be seen as righteous, but to be made righteous by God’s love. I will seek to serve others quietly and faithfully, knowing that God alone sees and rewards what is done in secret.
