Fifth Sunday Of Lent Year C

Fifth Sunday Of Lent Year C

It is not often that I find myself reading the gospel through the juridical lens. This gospel of John 18:1-11 is typical. However, it is a reminder to anyone who is interested in biblical interpretation to appreciate how the Gospel is deeply rooted in the Greco-Roman world and culture. It was meant to be a trial of a woman caught in adultery. But it is plotted to test Jesus. He has to choose whether to go the way of Jewish Law of Moses (only the woman faces the punishment) or the Roman Law (whoever the adulterous man is must be punished as well) Jesus chooses a third option of forgiveness and liberation for all. Did the accusers walk away and go back to their sin? Who knows? Did the woman leave the presence of Jesus, liberated to sin no more? Most certainly. What a privilege and an utmost supreme advantage it is to have Christ, the wisdom of God. (Philipians 3:8) How privileged we are to be part of the New Deeds God is doing among the living.
