⁣GENESIS – Chapter 14 – KJV – Audio & Text with Headings

Genesis Chapter 14 Summary 1. The War of the Kings (Verses 1-12) Four Eastern Kings (Amraphel of Shinar, Arioch of Ellasar, Chedorlaomer of Elam, and Tidal of Goiim) wage war against five rebellious Canaanite kings (Bera of Sodom, Birsha of Gomorrah, Shinab of Admah, Shemeber of Zeboiim, and the king of Bela/Zoar). The eastern kings defeat the Canaanite kings in battle, plundering Sodom and Gomorrah and taking captives—including Lot (Abram’s nephew). 2. Abram Rescues Lot (Verses 13-16) A fugitive informs Abram (still called Abram at this point) that Lot has been captured. Abram mobilizes 318 trained men from his household and allies with three Amorite brothers (Mamre, Eshcol, and Aner). In a surprise night attack, Abram defeats Chedorlaomer’s forces near Dan and pursues them to Hobah (north of Damascus). He rescues Lot, the people of Sodom, and their possessions. 3. Melchizedek Blesses Abram (Verses 17-20) After the victory, two kings meet Abram: The King of Sodom (unnamed) comes to thank him. Melchizedek, the king of Salem (Jerusalem) and priest of God Most High (El Elyon), brings bread and wine and blesses Abram, saying: "Blessed be Abram by God Most High, Creator of heaven and earth. And blessed be God Most High, who delivered your enemies into your hand." Abram gives Melchizedek a tenth (tithe) of everything, acknowledging his priesthood. 4. Abram’s Refusal of Sodom’s Wealth (Verses 21-24) The king of Sodom offers Abram all the recovered goods but asks only for his people back. Abram refuses to take anything from Sodom, declaring: "I will accept nothing belonging to you, not even a thread or the strap of a sandal, so that you will never say, ‘I made Abram rich.’" He only allows his allies (Mamre, Eshcol, Aner) to take their share. Key Themes and Significance Abram as a Warrior: Shows Abram’s courage, leadership, and loyalty to family (rescuing Lot). Melchizedek’s Role: A priest-king who worships the true God (El Elyon). His blessing and Abram’s tithe foreshadow Christ’s priesthood (Psalm 110:4; Hebrews 7). Abram’s Integrity: His refusal of Sodom’s wealth demonstrates trust in God’s provision, not pagan kings. Sodom’s Foreshadowing: The chapter hints at Sodom’s corruption (later destroyed in Genesis 19). Notable Parallels Melchizedek and Christ: Both are "priest-kings" without recorded lineage (Hebrews 7:3). Abram’s Tithe: The first biblical mention of tithing, linking worship and gratitude. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- The Book of Genesis is available in audio format from the King James Version of the Holy Bible.
