Myth Buster #3: Safest to Birth in the US?!?

These numbers affect EACH OF US. They’re not just something distant on the government website! The United States spends more per birth than any other country in the world, yet have some of the worst stats of all developed nations. The US is #64 for maternal mortality, losing 21 moms/100,00 live births in 2020, tied with Lebanon. Croatia lost only 5, South Korea 8! And infant mortality is just as shameful. US is 53rd of 227, with Serbia, Cuba, and the UK all having more babies live through birth and the first year than the United States. The difference is that most of the other countries use Midwives as primary care for their mothers and babies. The US has “OB/GYN’s over represented in maternity care, relative to Midwives.” Obstetrics is a surgical specialty, and applying those tools and perspective without discernment brings much higher risk to the entire population. US also lacks comprehensive postpartum support in so many ways. Here’s what you can do to protect you and your community: 1. Consider using a Midwife, regardless of the setting, whenever you can. You’ll have more support and information for normal. 2. Always have a Doula, or someone to act as your medical advocate and support, especially if you’re birthing in any medical setting. They can help you have truly inform consent for best decision making. 3. EVERY.SINGLE.FAMILY. should be encouraged to send a letter or access the hospital feedback link about their birth. Help them know what worked, tell them what didn’t, no matter how long after the birth it takes to be up to it. ✨Welcome to Indigo Forest, I’m Beth Barbeau.
