Hammerhead Shark Attacks Tarpon (6/6/11) Capt. Chris Johnson SeaSquared Charters Florida Keys
Anglers from around the world flock to Marathon Florida Keys for our amazing tarpon fishing! Also known as the silver king, tarpon are green or steel blue above and silver on the sides and belly. They have a deep, thick body, a forked tail and a long trailer at the end of the dorsal fin. Tarpon range in size from 12 inches or less to about 75 pounds, on average, although big fish of 100 to 150 pounds are numerous. The world record is 283 pounds, 4 ounces, and the Florida record is 243 pounds. Tarpon are famous for the spectacle and frequency of their jumps. Giant tarpon don't quite match the acrobatics of the smaller ones, but they leap frequently enough in shallow water and with even more fury. Tarpon reside in the Florida Keys year-round; however, the largest of the specimens show up in April, May and June for their spawning. They like to hang out at bridges, channels and passes where they can linger and await a meal to swim by. In Marathon, we fish for tarpon at the Seven Mile, Bahia Honda and Long Key Bridges. A great way to spend an evening is to take a stroll on the Old Seven Mile Bridge and enjoy the world-famous Florida Keys sunset while you watch the tarpon anglers below. Capt.
