𝐇𝐨𝐥𝐲 𝐎𝐫𝐝𝐞𝐫𝐬 is the sacrament through which the mission entrusted by Christ to His apostles continues to be exercised in the Church until the end of time. It is the sacrament of apostolic ministry and includes three degrees: episcopate (bishops), presbyterate (priests), and diaconate (deacons) 𝐁𝐢𝐛𝐥𝐢𝐜𝐚𝐥 𝐅𝐨𝐮𝐧𝐝𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧𝐬 𝐨𝐟 𝐇𝐨𝐥𝐲 𝐎𝐫𝐝𝐞𝐫𝐬 1. 𝑱𝒆𝒔𝒖𝒔 𝑬𝒔𝒕𝒂𝒃𝒍𝒊𝒔𝒉𝒆𝒔 𝒕𝒉𝒆 𝑴𝒊𝒏𝒊𝒔𝒕𝒆𝒓𝒊𝒂𝒍 𝑷𝒓𝒊𝒆𝒔𝒕𝒉𝒐𝒐𝒅 In the Gospels, Jesus appoints the Twelve Apostles, giving them authority to preach, baptize, and forgive sins. This act signifies the delegation of His own authority to these chosen men, who would carry on His mission after His Ascension 𝐌𝐚𝐭𝐭𝐡𝐞𝐰 𝟏𝟔:𝟏𝟖-𝟏𝟗 Jesus appoints Peter as the head of the Apostles, giving him the keys to the kingdom of heaven. 𝐌𝐚𝐭𝐭𝐡𝐞𝐰 𝟐𝟖:𝟏𝟗-𝟐𝟎 Jesus commissions the Apostles to preach the Gospel and baptize in His name. 𝐉𝐨𝐡𝐧 𝟐𝟎:𝟐𝟏-𝟐𝟑 Jesus breathes on the Apostles, imparting the Holy Spirit to them and empowering them to forgive sins in His name 2. 𝑨𝒑𝒐𝒔𝒕𝒐𝒍𝒊𝒄 𝑺𝒖𝒄𝒄𝒆𝒔𝒔𝒊𝒐𝒏 Catholic theology holds that the apostolic tradition-including teaching, preaching, and authority-is handed down from the apostles to the bishops through the laying on of hands, as a permanent office in the Church: 𝐀𝐜𝐭𝐬 𝟔:𝟔 The Apostles lay hands on seven men to serve the community. 𝟏 𝐓𝐢𝐦𝐨𝐭𝐡𝐲 𝟓:𝟐𝟐 Paul instructs Timothy to "lay hands hastily on no man," emphasizing the careful selection of leaders. 𝟐 𝐓𝐢𝐦𝐨𝐭𝐡𝐲 𝟏:𝟔 Paul reminds Timothy to rekindle the gift of God within him through the laying on of hands 3. 𝑶𝒍𝒅 𝑻𝒆𝒔𝒕𝒂𝒎𝒆𝒏𝒕 𝑷𝒓𝒆𝒄𝒆𝒅𝒆𝒏𝒕𝒔 The Old Testament foreshadows the ministerial priesthood: 𝐌𝐞𝐥𝐜𝐡𝐢𝐳𝐞𝐝𝐞𝐤 - In Genesis 14:18, Melchizedek, king of Salem, is described as "priest of God Most High," offering bread and wine. This prefigures Christ's priesthood and the Eucharist. 𝐀𝐚𝐫𝐨𝐧 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐋𝐞𝐯𝐢𝐭𝐞𝐬 In Numbers 3:5-10, God designates Aaron and his descendants as priests to serve in the Tabernacle, establishing a hereditary priesthood. 𝐓𝐡𝐞 𝐑𝐨𝐥𝐞 𝐨𝐟 𝐇𝐨𝐥𝐲 𝐎𝐫𝐝𝐞𝐫𝐬 𝐢𝐧 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐂𝐡𝐮𝐫𝐜𝐡 The sacrament of Holy Orders is essential for the Church's mission: 𝐓𝐞𝐚𝐜𝐡𝐢𝐧𝐠 Ordained ministers proclaim the Gospel and teach the faith. 𝐖𝐨𝐫𝐬𝐡𝐢𝐩 They lead the faithful in liturgical celebrations, especially the Eucharist. 𝐆𝐨𝐯𝐞𝐫𝐧𝐚𝐧𝐜𝐞 They shepherd the community, guiding and caring for the faithful. Through Holy Orders, the Church ensures the continuity of Christ's mission, maintaining an unbroken line of apostolic succession. The Catholic Church is 2,000 years old.
