The Holy Eucharist: Rite II on The Twentieth Sunday after Pentecost, October 15, 2023 at 11 a.m. The Rt. Rev. Chilton Knudsen, Retired Bishop of Maine, was the preacher. Assisting: The Reverend Jonathon W. Jensen, Rector, The Reverend Neil K. Raman, Senior Associate Rector, The Reverend Cameron J. Soulis, Associate Rector, The Reverend Geoffrey S. Royce, Deacon, Dr. Alan Lewis, Director of Music, Jon Tyillian, Assistant Organist. Musical Notes: The American church-musician and composer Craig Phillips (b. 1961) is the Director of Music at All Saints’ Episcopal Church in Beverly Hills, where he has served in various capacities for more than three decades. In that time he has established himself as one of the preëminent composers of our time, particularly in the field of traditionally-grounded sacred choral music, though his oeuvre extends to purely-instrumental genres, as well. The Prayer, for organ, is freshly published this year. A True Hymn, on a beautiful text by the seventeenth-century priest and poet George Herbert, was composed for Calvary’s choir in 2007. (Herbert’s text opens with an evocation of today’s passage from the Epistle to the Philippians, in which Paul addresses the congregation there as “my joy and crown”; the balance of the poem is a reflection on the nature and art of sacred poetry, and, by extension, music.) The Postlude, based on today’s concluding hymn-tune, was likewise dates from 2007, in celebration of a new organ in Ridgewood, New Jersey. On Sunday, November 5, at 5 p.m., the Choir presents Fauré’s beloved setting of the Requiem Mass in its liturgical context of a communion liturgy, in observance of All Saints-tide and the commemoration of all the faithful departed. Please join us for this annual occasion of prayeful recollection as we remember our beloved departed and commend them to God’s tender and eternal mercies.
