Homily for the Mass The Solemnity of Our Lord Jesus Christ, King of the Universe 11 23 25 C
Father Damian explained that the Feast of Christ the King was established in 1925 by Pope Pius XI during a time of global turmoil, rising nationalism, and severe persecution of faith in places like Mexico and Russia. The Pope wanted Christians to remember that their true allegiance is not to nations or political parties, but to Jesus, the King of the universe. Father Damian noted that recognizing Christ as our King often grows slowly, just as it took three anointings for Israel to fully acknowledge David as king. He also clarified the idea of “merit,” teaching that we don’t earn salvation, but we cooperate with God’s grace—much like a child giving a gift bought with a parent’s money. Finally, he reminded us that Christ’s kingship is revealed on the cross, and as members of His kingdom, we are called to imitate His love, forgiveness, and endurance, trusting that He is leading us to paradise.
