D-Day 75th anniversary: Canada/France joint ceremony honours Battle of Falaise Pocket

A joint Canadian-French ceremony paid tribute on Tuesday to the sacrifices made at the Battle of Poche de Falaise - The Falaise Pocket - considered to the the end of the Normandy campaign. Canadian troops suffered some 5,679 casualties in the fight to encircle the bulk of the German forces what were fighting to prevent the breakout from the Normandy beachhead in the summer of 1944. 5,150 Polish troops were also lost in addition to an unknown number of other Allied troops, but the result was 50,000 German soldiers captured and the end of the Normandy campaign.
