Serviceberry Trees: Rust Disease and Lace Bugs

Serviceberry Trees: Rust Disease and Lace Bugs

Serviceberries (Amelanchier spp.) are popular small flowering native trees for Maryland landscapes. They have white flowers in early spring, followed by edible berries in early summer. These trees provide a lot of support for native wildlife, including pollinators and birds. If you grow a serviceberry, there are some very common conditions you might see on your tree: rust and lace bugs. These conditions will vary from year to year, depending on the weather and the overall health of your tree. Here, horticulturist Miri Talabac shows examples of rust and lace bugs on serviceberry that is otherwise growing very well. 00:00- Introduction to serviceberry and two common conditions 00:19- Rust 02:12- Lace Bug ********** The University of Maryland Extension Home and Garden Information Center's mission is to connect Maryland residents to trusted science-based resources to grow healthy gardens, landscapes, and communities.
