Algeria Buys Russia's Su-57 Stealth Fighter Jets to Boost Defences | Firstpost Africa | N18G In a major boost for Algeria's air force, the North African country is set to receive Russian Su-57 fighter jets this year. The deal between Russia and Algeria has made the African nation the first export customer for the aircraft. Algeria's military personnel are also being trained in Russia. Reports say Algiers has purchased 14 of the Russian Su-57s. Algeria has more than doubled its defence spending in the last four years. It currently has the highest defence budget in Africa. The decision comes in response to numerous coups across the Sahel region including those in Burkina Faso, Mali, Niger, Chad, Guinea and Gabon.
