Abundance of Wine & Life

Abundance of Wine & Life

The focus of the lectionary readings for this second Sunday after Epiphany is on the abundance of God's everlasting love and generous hospitality, where people, according to the Psalmist in (Psalm 36:8-9) "feast on the abundance of (God's) house, and God give(s) them drink from the river of (his) delights. For with (God) is the fountain of life; in (His) delight we see light." We certainly see this clearly practiced by Jesus in his very first miracle in the Cana of Galilee Wedding as he fills the empty jars with abundance of good wine (John 2:1-11). Isaiah's text for this Sunday also reminds us of God's promise as God becomes the husband of God's people using the metaphor of a wedding celebration to describe God's delight in a more intimate relationship with God's people; "and as the bridegroom rejoices over the bride, so shall your God rejoice over you." (Isaiah 62:5). All of this tells us that this miracle in Cana the Galilee has much more meaningful indications than a mere transformation of water into wine. What do you think is the real meaning of this first miracle?
