The Holy Eucharist celebrated by His Eminence, Oswald Cardinal Gracias - Maundy Thursday - Mass of the Lord's Supper - April 2022. Live streamed from the Holy Name High School Quadrangle, Colaba. --- Reflection on Maundy Thursday The Jewish Passover meal is reinterpreted to include three radically new Christian features: an inclusive table fellowship, an ordained priesthood, and a double mandate to celebrate the memorial and to cultivate a spirit of service in an ongoing manner. The community of Christians all over the world have continued to remember the first mandate — “do this in memory of me”— in some form or the other, with Catholics perhaps being the most faithful in re-actualising this memorial in terms of experiencing the Real Presence of Christ. However, what often seems to be forgotten—or at least given less significance—is the takeaway from the second mandate associated with the washing of the feet: “I have given you an example so that you may copy what I have done to you”. In forgetting the second mandate — or in minimizing its significance — we risk diminishing the grace and efficacy of the first. The essence of table fellowship is not just being nourished by the sacred food of the Eucharistic presence.
