Cleaning up an old brood frame and fitting wax foundation

The brood frames in a beehive should be changed every 2-3 years to help prevent any disease take hold. I try to change a third of the frames a year picking out the oldest early on on the season, having moved them to the edge of the brood nest so that they have no brood in them and very little stores (nectar/honey). I can then sterilise them with a steamer. I have a modified hive roof that a wallpaper steam stripper can attach to. I fill a brood box with old frames to be steamed out. Most of the wax melts and flows out of the front of the steam setup. The frames and the brood box are sterilised in the process. What you get left in the frames is the brown cocoons of the bee pupa. These can easily be pulled of and stored for later use in the smoker or as firelighters.
