How to Walk to Support Your Pelvic Floor Health | Better Walking – Healing Prolapse and Incontinence
Walking is amazing for the pelvic floor and the whole body. It’s probably one of the best things you can do for your body for longevity, bone health, heart health, and your muscular skeletal system. However, for many people who have a prolapse or struggle with incontinence – walking can make symptoms feel much worse. It’s amazing when walking – SO good for us - doesn’t actually make us feel worse! There’s so much that goes into walking with greater efficiency, but one of the most important elements is walking with a deeper sense of core integration. And by that I do not mean how well you can engage your core. There is a huge difference between engaging your core arbitrarily for movements - or for your entire core system to be integrated and reflexive so walking becomes more effortless and the e outcome is less symptoms. When we walk and our hips sashay - swing side to side, that is a loss of deep core integration. One of the primary movers and players for walking is our psoas muscle - the stability it offers our spine as well as the ability to move the leg is what also allows our core wall to have more support. When we sway our hips and walk - that is lost. We do not access the deep layers and players of support from the #feet all the way up into the glutes and pelvic floor with that pattern. Try this. Stand up and exaggerate walking with a huge sashay in your hips and then go to the other extreme spectrum of walking with almost no hip movement. Notice the difference in your muscles and your core. And then see if you can find that middle ground. Use your legs purposefully and almost feel like you are pushing off your feet each step you take. That push off is crucial for pelvic floor health and when we sashay, we do not get that.
