Five Cantonese traditions to attract luck during the new year 

Growing up in Hong Kong, here are 5 things my Cantonese family do during New Year to attract luck and happiness 1. Say 新年進步(san1 nin4 zeon3 bou6) “advancing in the new year” instead of 新年快樂 (san1 nin4 faai3 lok6 ) Happy new year  While both are luck phrases, the Cantonese words for Happiness (快樂) sound like going down fast (快落), which can turn into a whole new lesson from the elderlies, been there done that=] 2. Go walk or drive around somewhere (行大運) 行大運, means walking around to get good luck, the longer the distance, the greater the luck 3. Wear red and gold color Red symbolizes prosperity and gold represents wealth. 4. Give Red Envelopes Elders or married couples give red envelopes with money to younger unmarried family members, symbolizing blessings and protection from bad luck. Remember it has to be an even $ amount (eg $8, $68, $100, or whatever you like), an odd $ amount (like $101) is for funerals. 5. Eat lucky foods! See my New Year dinner reel for more dishes and the explanations Whole Steamed Fish (蒸魚) meaning 年年有餘, Fish symbolizes surplus because "魚" sounds like "餘" (extra or abundance). The wish is always to have more than enough each year. Shrimp (蝦) meaning 笑口常開. The Cantonese word for shrimp (蝦) sounds like “ha ha” (哈哈) or laughter, symbolizing joy and a happy life. Eggrolls (炸春卷) resemble gold bars, bringing wealth and good fortune Sticky Rice Cake (年糕) for growth and success in the year. The Cantonese word for "糕” sounds like "高" (tall or rising), and symbolizes advancing in career, promotions, and personal growth. Is there any other traditional belief that you have heard of?
