O Holy Night (Christmas hymn: goth rock)

O Holy Night (Christmas hymn: goth rock)

(Genre: goth rock) The lyrics for "O Holy Night" were originally written in French and called "Minuit, chrétiens!" (in English "Midnight, Christian!") in 1847 by poet Placide Cappeau. At Cappeau's request, these lyrics were later given music by opera composer Adolphe Adam and the resulting song became known as "Cantique de Noël". Later still, in 1855 John Sullivan Dwight translated the song and modified the melody into the English version that is popular today. The hymn beautifully and elegantly tells the story of Jesus' birth and how He came to redeem the world from its sins in a grand and operatic musical style. It is the night of the dear Savior's birth. Long lay the world, in sin and error pining. Till He appeared, and the soul felt its worth! [pre-chorus 1] A thrill of hope, the weary world rejoices. For yonder breaks, a new and glorious morn! [chorus] Fall on your knees! Hear the angel voices! Oh Night, divine! Oh Night, when Christ was born. Oh Night, oh Holy night! Oh Night, oh night divine! [verse 2] Led by the light of Faith serenely beaming. With glowing hearts by His cradle we stand. So led by light of a star sweetly gleaming. Here come the wise men from Orient land. [pre-chorus 2] The King of kings lay thus in lowly manger. In all our trials born to be our friend. CHORUS [verse 3] Truly He taught us to love one another! His law is love, and His Gospel is Peace. Chains shall He break, for the slave is our brother. And in His name all oppression shall cease! [pre-chorus 3] Sweet hymns of joy in grateful chorus, raise we. Let all within us Praise His Holy name! CHORUS [outro] Fall on your knees! Hear the angel voices! Oh Night, divine! Oh Night, when Christ was born. Oh Night, oh Holy night! Oh Night, oh night divine!
