Pope Leo XIV lists film about the Holocaust as one of his favorites.
Pope Leo XIV recently mentioned "Life Is Beautiful" as one of his favorite films. The 1997 film offers a unique perspective on the Holocaust, having won Oscars for Best Foreign Language Film, Best Original Score, and Best Actor for its lead actor, Roberto Benigni. On the one hand, this reference to a film about the Holocaust at this moment is very significant, especially given the 60th anniversary of Nostra Aetate, a document of the Catholic Church that condemns antisemitism. On the other hand, however, the film chosen by the Pope is quite controversial, since, for many survivors, it softens the reality of the concentration camps and shows something that would be impossible in reality. In a time of growing antisemitism, denial, and distortions about the Holocaust, works like this can harm the preservation of the memory of this historical crime that occurred during World War II. At the same time, they can draw attention to this very relevant theme. And you, have you seen Life Is Beautiful? What do you think of the film?
