Japan extends COVID-19 state of emergency for 19 areas until September 30

It was set to end Sunday, but the extension comes as the country's hospital bed occupancy rate continues to remain above 50 percent despite overall decline in new infections. According to a minister in charge of Japan's coronavirus response, the government is in its final stages of drafting a plan to "live with the virus."
