Title: Billy Budd Author: Herman Melville Narrator: Peter Joyce Format: Unabridged Length: 3 hrs and 56 mins Language: English Release date: 06-21-11 Publisher: Assembled Stories Ratings: 4 of 5 out of 18 votes Genres: Classics, British Literature Publisher's Summary: On one level... Melvilles tale is an historical adventure telling the story of life aboard ship shortly after the mutiny at Spithead in 1797. Billy is taken from a homeward bound merchantman to serve on the Seventy Four HMS Indomitable. He falls foul of Claggart, the Master at Arms, and the final confrontation results in death. Billy becomes an unwilling martyr - what passes for justice must be implemented because of the rebellious climate of the time. However, below the surface lie some of Melvilles thematic obsessions: the aristocratic savage placed against an inhumanity born of service in time of war, innocence overtaken by fate and the worthy encompassed by the inevitable. The natures of evil and conscience are explored and Billy Budd is the authors last word upon the strange mystery of himself and human destiny. Melville is regarded by many as the finest author America has produced. I bought this book for the Benito Cereno novella that's included, as I had to read it for a class-- that story alone makes this collection worth it. Alarming and chilling, but satisfyingly written, that's a short novel that I think everyone should read-- the perfect merging of the the more formal/literary aspects of the writing with Melville's political intentions. A classic picture of harsh life at sea Not sure what prompted me to read this classic; it reminds one of harsh life at sea in the 1800's. Read between the lines Bill Budd is one of my favorite stories. The story of Billy and Captain Vere is a perfect allegory for many relationships that exist between young people and society and vice versa. Well worth reading between the lines. Five Stars Awesome classic Melville
