Analyst on latest UK election results
(13 Dec 2019) A political analyst said UK Prime Minister Boris Johnson was able to use the agreement he brokered with the European Union as a selling point for the Conservative Party for voters who were frustrated that the Brexit progress was dragging on. Johnson was re-elected to his West London seat following the UK general election and looks poised to lead a majority Conservative government. Jonathan Hopkin, Associate Professor in Comparative Politics at the London School of Economics, said the Conservatives were able to appeal to voters who wanted to the leave the EU, partially through what he called "a socially conservative message". He said the party was also able to target voters "in relatively poor declining economically vulnerable parts of the UK, which of course would imply an economic policy which is a little bit more centre-left". Hopkin said Labour's loss could not all be blamed on party leader Jeremy Corbyn, but suggested his election strategy of anchoring the Labour to the left had not paid off.
