Toe Walking in Early Age Cerebral Palsy Children: Treatment Planning & Case Study: Part 5

In young children affected by cerebral palsy, toe walking is a primary and initial concern. This is caused by spasticity in the gastrocnemius muscle in the calf and poor physical balance. In this condition, the heel does not touch the ground while standing and walking, making it difficult for the child to stand still for a short period. This also increases the risk of frequent falls. In the initial years, this can be managed with proper exercise techniques and dynamic AFO (Ankle-Foot Orthosis). However, incorrect stretching methods and improper AFO can lead to poor long-term outcomes. When muscles become too stiff in children under 6 years, Botulinum toxin injections, plaster casting, or both may be necessary. Surgery is often required only after the age of 6." 👉About Dr Jitendra Kumar Jain Dr Jitendra Kumar Jain, MS Ortho (PGI Chandigarh) & DNB Ortho is a Senior Paediatric Orthopaedic Surgeon & Chairman of Trishla Foundation, India.
