For the first time in 53 years, astronauts have flown to the Moon and returned safely home. Nasa’s Artemis II mission ended in a final fiery descent, with the four astronauts splashing down in the Pacific Ocean, shortly after 1am, following a bone-juddering 13-minute ride through Earth’s atmosphere. It was the end of a triumphant mission that captivated the world, unveiled astonishing new panoramas of our home planet and the Moon, and conferred “international treasure” status on Reid Wiseman, Victor Glover, Christina Koch and Jeremy Hansen. Unlike the Apollo missions, when updates were limited to scant news bulletins and articles, Nasa livestreamed the whole event from cameras on Orion’s solar array and inside the crew capsule.
