Antihypertensive Drugs (Part 02) = Drugs acting on RAS | ACEI | ARB's | Direct Renin Inhibitors

Angiotensin converting enzyme inhibitors (ACE inhibitors) are a class of drugs that are used to treat hypertension. These drugs work by blocking the action of the angiotensin converting enzyme, which is responsible for converting angiotensin I to angiotensin II. Angiotensin II is a potent vasoconstrictor that increases blood pressure by constricting blood vessels. By blocking the action of the angiotensin converting enzyme, ACE inhibitors reduce the production of angiotensin II and promote vasodilation, which helps to lower blood pressure. Common examples of ACE inhibitors include lisinopril, enalapril, and Ramipril. Angiotensin receptor blockers (ARBs) are another class of drugs that are used to treat hypertension. These drugs work by blocking the action of the angiotensin II receptor, which is responsible for mediating the effects of angiotensin II. By blocking the action of the angiotensin II receptor, ARBs reduce the production of angiotensin II and promote vasodilation, which helps to lower blood pressure. Common examples of ARBs include losartan, valsartan, and Irbesartan. Direct Renin Inhibitors (DRIs) are a newer class of drugs that are used to treat hypertension. These drugs work by blocking the action of renin, which is responsible for converting angiotensinogen to angiotensin I. By blocking the action of renin, DRIs reduce the production of angiotensin I and promote vasodilation, which helps to lower blood pressure. Common examples of DRIs include Aliskiren. All three classes of drugs are effective at lowering blood pressure, but they work through different mechanisms. ACE inhibitors and ARBs are commonly used in combination with other drugs to achieve optimal blood pressure control. DRIs are not typically used in combination with other drugs and are reserved for patients who do not respond to other treatments.
