[V2] Act Start [Feel the Need] - Sonic 2 8-Bit (1992) {Sega Genesis Remix}
Version 1 (More Accurate): • Act Start [Feel the Need] - Sonic 2 8-Bit ... Song: Act Start Composer: Naofumi "Nao Chan" Hataya Arranger: DGC Pictures Entertainment From: Sonic the Hedgehog 2 (1992) [SEGA Master System & Game Gear] Original Description (Original video uploaded 11-17-2025) Greetings, Fellow Human! Before jumping in to rescue his buddy, let's wait for the game to load as Sonic chases after Tails... with Tails chasing after him. It's a lil silly when you think about it, but they still look really cool. There's not much to say about this one to be honest. It's very short, sweet, and to the point, with the only really new things I added being the bassline and drum pattern. The composer for this track was a little harder to discipher. I've seen people attribute this to Naofumi Hataya, however I think this might have actually been Masafumi Ogata's work, as if it's true he wrote the Title Theme, then he would've written the Life Lost jingle, which has a similar PSG channel layout to this theme, with the bass in first channel, the main melody in second, and the counter melody in the third. Update for Version 2 Okay, within the past 24 hours, I've recieved new information. In the comments of the original upload, Hybis The Majin (@HybisMajin) pointed out a detail I never noticed before, that being this theme is near identical to the intro to Palmtree Panic Zone's Present theme for Sonic CD's Japanese OST, a song that was composed by Naofumi Hataya. Also, Sega Retro's article on Hataya used to credit this theme to him as well. I had seen the Sega Retro article before posting this, but I never made the connection to Palmtree Panic until Hybis mentioned it, and given both soundtracks were being developed simultaneously, it wouldn't surprise me if it was in fact Hataya that wrote this. Given this, I decided to swap the first two FM channels from the previous version to better match how Hataya would've arranged this for the Genesis, as Ogata often put the bass in FM 1 while Hataya used FM 2. Update for Going Back to Version 1 Okay, now I've recieved some NEW new information. While this is similar to Palmtree Panic, the way the theme is programmed in the original Master System & Game Gear version is more similar to the tracks done by Ogata than Hataya. The Cutting Room Floor has a great article that I didn't learn about until recently which includes all of the Raw Music Pitches for the game (https://tcrf.net/Sonic_the_Hedgehog_2.... These were programmed in a higher key before being pitched downward to their intended key. The Act Start theme never needed to be Restored like the tracks confirmed and believed to be by Hataya, so it's more likely that Ogata was responsible for this.
