An ambitious urban development plan aims to make the city a place where humans and Pokémon can live together. Right after your arrival, you'll meet your first partner Pokémon: Chikorita, Tepig, or Totodile, and begin your adventure as a Pokémon Trainer. While battles in previous Pokémon games were turn-based, in Pokémon Legends: Z-A they take place in real time for the first time. Trainers and Pokémon move simultaneously, and you decide when your Pokémon use their attacks. Besides type differences, timing, recharge times, ranges, and attack delays now play a crucial strategic role. You'll be staying at Hotel Z, an old building in the heart of Lumiose City. From here, you'll embark on exciting missions with new allies. You'll meet either Alton or Zita, depending on which appearance you choose at the start of the game. The mysterious Azett, the hotel's owner, is a towering three meters tall and claims to be over 3,000 years old. He's always accompanied by his special Floette (Everblood), which carries a black flower. The legendary Pokémon Zygarde also plays a part. Zygarde is a creature composed of many cell-like components that changes its form depending on how many of them are connected. In Lumiose City, you'll encounter Pokémon capable of Mega Evolution, a particularly powerful form of evolution. To activate this ability, you need Mega Stones, which you can obtain from the Quazar Corporation in exchange for Mega Shards. You can find these shards by destroying Mega Crystals scattered throughout the city. The Stone Boutique also sells these items. However, an unusual phenomenon is occurring in the city: the so-called Mega Evolution. Wild Pokémon undergo Mega Evolution on their own, without a trainer or Mega Stone, and become enraged in the process. To solve this mystery, the Quazar Corporation and Team MZ have tasked you with calming the Mega Evolution Pokémon, along with other trainers. As a reward, you will receive rare Mega Stones. As part of the city development project, the so-called Wild Sectors were also created—artificially designed habitats that provide a home for Pokémon right in the heart of the city. Here, you can observe, battle, and catch wild Pokémon. Some Pokémon flee as soon as they spot you, so it's worth sneaking up on them or hiding to catch them more easily. Particularly powerful specimens, the so-called Elite Pokémon, are larger, more aggressive, and difficult to defeat, but they make valuable companions once you catch them. Competitive Pokémon enthusiasts can test their skills in the Z-A Battle Club, where you can duel online or locally with up to three other players. Within three minutes, you must defeat as many opposing Pokémon as possible to earn points and ranks, from Z Rank to A Rank. You can freely choose whether to participate in ranked battles or private matches. Of course, fashion is also a must in Lumiose City! Just like in Pokémon X & Y, you can customize your appearance, from hairstyles, hair colors, and eyebrows to lip color and eyelashes. Color combinations and gradients allow you to emphasize your style.
