EPHPHATA! BE OPENED! The Word Exposed with Cardinal Tagle (September 5, 2021) Subscribe to JesComTV http://bit.ly/3qN0biC We are on the Twenty-third Sunday in Ordinary Time; and in today Gospel, Jesus heals “a deaf man who had a speech impediment.” “Ephphatha! Be opened!” he tells him, restoring his hearing and speech. Note that Jesus’s word is accompanied by something physical: spittle and touch. This is kept in our sacramental practice. In the anointing of the sick, the proclamation of God’s Word is accompanied with the holy oil with which the forehead and hands of the sick are anointed. It’s also worth noting that the man is most likely a Gentile because the area is Gentile territory. This means that God’s healing, in Jesus, is for all. Today, this is made possible through the sacraments which are conduits of God’s grace and signs of Jesus’s love. Jesus opens us to God’s saving action. #TheWordExposed #CardinalTagle #23rdSundayinOrdinaryTime ______________ The Word Exposed with Cardinal Luis Antonio Tagle, Prefect of the Congregation for the Evangelization of Peoples reflects on Sunday's Mass readings each week.
