What is infrared photography and how can you shoot infrared yourself? When you are out shooting photos with a regular digital camera you are capturing light which is visible to the human eye. This light lies within a certain range of wavelengths ranging from 380 to around 700 nanometers and covers the full color spectrum. Infrared photography however captures light beyond those 700 nanometers and thus makes it is possible for us to see Infrared light. This has benefits in many areas like science or military but for this video it is all about the art of infrared landscape photography. As we all know a regular camera captures photos with natural colors, but how do we capture infrared images? Well, there are three different ways to do this: You could use a modified camera, use a special infrared filter on your lens or if you want to keep it old school use infrared film. If you are looking for a cheap way to test infrared photography you should get yourself an infrared filter to screw on your lens. Keep in mind that you will have to use a tripod as you have to use long exposures to get a photo this way. And this also only works on some cameras! If you are more serious about infrared photography you might want to get a converted digital camera. Here the infrared cut filter which covers the sensor is removed and replaced with an infrared pass filter and thus the camera becomes sensitive to infrared light. The converted infrared camera now can take photos without the need for long exposure times. Alternatively, you can also go for infrared film for an analog camera, but besides the specialized film you are required to also use an infrared filter on the lens and a specialized developing process for the film. When you finally take your first infrared images you might notice a bright spot in the center of your photos – a so called hotspot. Their appearance is dependent on which lens you are using as some lenses do not produce hotspots at all and are far more desirable because of this.
