On October 24, 1944, USS CASSIN YOUNG, a Fletcher-class destroyer, participated in the largest naval engagement in world history in the Battle of Leyte Gulf. There CASSIN YOUNG came to the aid of aircraft carrier USS PRINCETON, which had been hit by a dive bomber, eventually rescuing 120 of PRINCETON's crew.
