UK plans to reopen travel for foreign holidays to double-jabbed Brits this summer
BRITS shouldn't "write off" hopes of foreign summer holidays with plans afoot to reopen travel to the double-jabbed, a minister declared today. Treasury minister Jesse Norman confirmed the Government is looking at ways of allowing fully vaccinated people to go abroad again this year. He said the UK must make sure it doesn't get "left behind" other countries like France and Germany which are now reopening their borders. His remarks are the most upbeat in weeks about the prospect of foreign holidays after the spread of the Indian variant dashed hopes of a getaway. They come amid tentative signs the growth in cases might be starting to slow and increasingly strong data about the effectiveness of the vaccines. Asked about the possibility of allowing double-jabbed Brits to travel again, Mr Norman said: "This is one of those things that's being considered. "The Government is keeping all of these fast moving developments under a fairly close scrutiny as you might imagine. "We don't want to get left behind by countries which may be adopting a two jabs approach if it can be done safely, carefully and securely. "We're keenly aware of the concerns that people have. There's a lot of desire to travel but we have to be prudent, we have to be careful. "We have to be cautious and at the same time we have to respect the needs of people in other countries which have their own public health issues. "It's a complex picture but we're trying to do all we can to proceed forward safely and appropriately given the different factors in play." Asked if Brits can start dreaming of a summer trip again, he added: "I wouldn't write anything off at this point. "We are trying to move cautiously and progressively in the right direction, but we are in a situation where the virus is not something we control. "We have seen this new variant and therefore it would be imprudent to make any carte blanche or firm statement now."
