Our Dirty Dancing Wedding First Dance with Perfect Lift

Our Dirty Dancing Wedding First Dance with Perfect Lift

When we first started planning our wedding, Chris suggested we try the Dirty Dancing lift in our living room. I was terrified of heights, but we thought we might just pull it off. For Chris, it was a fun challenge; for me, it was quite sentimental, as Baby was heading to Mount Holyoke that fall. At ‪@MountHolyokeCollege‬, we started the (now) tradition of watching the movie under the stars every fall my freshman year. To me, the song represents a full circle from my first days in the US to my special day dancing with the love of my life. Through a friend’s recommendation, we worked with Coach Jan Ondrias, a talented dancer and coach for the MIT ballroom dance team, to learn the full choreography. Over the next several months, we met with Jan every week and practiced on our own. While I could memorize the steps, I was hopeless with timing and spinning. Chris, as my lead, had to keep us on beat, lift and catch me countless times, and practice his solo part. Through it all, we learned to trust each other. When I struggled with the spins, Chris was always patient, counting the beats and encouraging me, sometimes even demonstrating my moves to me. We practiced in public spaces around the ‪@mit‬ campus and even outside Disney World to overcome my shyness and get comfortable dancing in front of an audience. After countless hours of practice, we proved to ourselves that, with dedication and teamwork, we could achieve something we once thought was impossible. A special thanks to our groomsmen and my twin little brothers, who learned the moves in just one day and joined Chris so charismatically in the performance. Keeping our routine a secret until the moment I stepped onto the dance floor was exhilarating, and we’re incredibly proud of what we accomplished together. This is just the first of our many projects as a married couple, and we are incredibly grateful for your cheer and support.
