Deconstructing Sexy Sadie - The Beatles (Isolated Tracks)
Sexy Sadie was a song originally written about the Maharishi Mahesh Yogi. As George explained in Anthology, “...John had a song he had started to write which he was singing. ‘Maharishi what have you done?’ and I said, ‘You can’t say that, it’s ridiculous.’ I came up with the title Sexy Sadi and John changed Maharishi to Sexy Sadie” What actually went down to make John write the song isn’t completely known. Some accounts say the Maharishi made sexual advances towards a female student, however we don’t completely know. The last song written in India after the remaining two Beatles, John and George, left India. The song was demoed at George’s house as heard in the Esher demos. It was then brought into the studio on July 19th, 1968. These takes featured Ringo on drums, John on acoustic guitar, George on electric guitar, and Paul on organ. 25 takes of the song were recorded with none being deemed good enough. Five days later they started from scratch with a similar lineup but with John on electric guitar and Paul alternating between the organ and piano. By the end of the day they had gotten through 23 more takes, still none being deemed good enough. It wasn’t until August 13th, 1968 that the final recording sessions took place starting with take 100 for convenience. The basic track was Ringo on drums along with George on tambourine recorded to track 1, Paul’s piano on track 2, and two different sets of mics recording John's guitar on track 3 and 4. Take 107 was deemed the best and so they created a reduction mix combining John's guitar and Paul’s piano. Further overdubs included an organ played by Paul, more guitars played by George and Paul, Paul’s bass, backing vocals, and lead vocals. So the final track line up was bass on track 1, drums on track 2, pianos, backing vocals, electric guitar on track 3, and lead vocal, organ, tambourine on track 4. With that the song was ready for it's final mix. During the mixing process the ending instrumental was also shortened by almost 40 seconds.
