The centre-left Social Democrats have won the biggest share of the vote in Germany's national election, beating outgoing Chancellor Angela Merkel's centre-right Union bloc in a closely fought race. Ms Merkel, the country's leader since 2005, had already announced her plan to step down after the election, making the vote an era-changing event to set the future course of Europe's largest economy.
