Lesson 1 | Thursday, October 2 PROSPEROUS AND SUCCESSFUL Read Joshua 1:7-9 along with Genesis 24:40; Isaiah 53:10; and Psalm 1:1-3. Based on these texts, what does it mean to be prosperous and successful? The Hebrew term tsalach, translated as "you will prosper" (Josh. 1:8), implies the satisfactory fulfillment of a plan or a set of favorable circumstances. The verb sakal, translated "it will turn out well for you" (Josh. 1:8), but which literally means "to be wise," can also be translated as "to prosper" or "to be successful," "to be prudent," or "to act wisely." It appears frequently in Job, Proverbs, and Psalms, where the notion of success is closely linked to acting prudently, respecting God and obeying His Word. According to this perspective, success is not necessarily defined as material prosperity, although it does not exclude it, but rather consists of a state of harmony with the spiritual values and principles that constitute the foundation of the world created by God and expressed in His law. In fact, trust in God's promises, especially those of salvation by faith alone and those of divine empowerment to obey His law, are not opposed to each other, but rather represent two sides of the same coin. Read Romans 3:31. What does this text say about the relationship between law and faith? To pretend that faith in Jesus' atoning and sacrificial death on our behalf is contrary to obedience to God's law is to establish a false and dangerous dichotomy. Law and grace always go together. Only a superficial understanding of the role of the law can lead to perceiving it as opposed to grace. The Old Testament writers held the law in high esteem and considered it a source of delight (Ps. 1:2; 119:70, 77, 174). Properly considered and used, the law leads to a deeper understanding of one's own sinfulness (Rom. 7:7) and the need for Christ's righteousness (Gal. 3:24). No matter how hard you try to keep God's law through his grace, how has your own experience shown you your need for Christ's righteousness? #danielherrerajerez #biblelessons #sabbatianschool2023 #danielherrerajerez ⏩God bless you, brothers and sisters of the Bible lessons community.
