Lesson 4 | Thursday, October 23 THE SECOND BEST OPTION Read Exodus 17:7-13 and Joshua 6:15-20. What similarities do you find between these two war stories? How do they differ? Exodus 17 records the first occasion Israel fought after the Exodus, when the Israelites defended themselves against the Amalekites. Israel had witnessed divine omnipotence when God afflicted the Egyptians and delivered the Israelites. We have seen that God's initial plan for Israel did not include fighting other peoples (Exodus 23:28; 33:2). But shortly after their liberation from Egypt, the Israelites began to murmur along the way (Exodus 17:3), questioning even God's presence among them. It was at that moment that Amalek came to fight against Israel. This was no coincidence. God allowed the Amalekites to attack Israel so that they would learn to trust him again. Without compromising His principles, God descends to the level of His people, continually calling them to return to the ideal plan, to trust fully and without reservation in divine intervention. In fact, the law of war (Deut. 20) was given only after 40 years of experience in the desert, which was also a consequence of Israel's unbelief. New circumstances demanded new strategies, and it was then that God demanded that Israel completely annihilate the Canaanites (Deut. 20:16-18). In addition to war becoming a necessity for Israel, it also served as a test of their loyalty to God. The Lord did not abandon them, but allowed them to witness His power in response to their total dependence on Him. The Israelites' participation in the conquest is evident in Joshua's conclusion at the end of the book. Here it is said that the Canaanites were fighting against the Israelites (Josh. 24:11). Although the collapse of Jericho's walls was the result of a divine miracle, the people of Israel had to actively participate in the battle and face the stubborn resistance of the city's inhabitants. Israel's participation in the armed conflict became a way of developing unconditional trust in God's help. However, Israel was always reminded (Josh. 7:12, 13; 10:8) that the outcome of every battle was ultimately in the hands of the Lord, and that the only way they could influence the outcome of a military conflict was by virtue of their faith or disbelief regarding the Lord's promises. The choice was in their hands. #danielherrerajerez #biblelessons #sabathdayschools2023 #danielherrerajerez ⏩God bless you, brothers and sisters of the Bible Lessons community.
