Intro: Over the last 10 days I have extensively tested the new Samsung Galaxy Watch 5 for its sports and health tracking performance. A week ago I already released a quick first look at this Watch 5, but in this video we will take a complete and comprehensive look at the heart rate accuracy, sleep tracking performance, GPS tracking, battery life, oxygen saturation measurements and step counting accuracy of this brand new watch from Samsung. As always, I do not want to waste your time, so there are timestamps in the description below, and also on the timeline! As I also mentioned in my previous video, I think there are plenty of resources out there from which you can get the specs of the new Galaxy Watch 5, like Samsung’s website. So, in this video I will focus on unbiased performance testing of the new Galaxy Watch 5. Before we get started, I just want to mention two things that are different in the new Watch 5 compared to the Watch 4: first, supposedly the heart rate sensor might have been altered slightly, though honestly they look more or less the same, and second, Samsung also added a temperature sensor. However, as I discussed in my last video, I am not sure how useful that sensor will be. Now, without further ado, let’s get to the test results, and I want to start off with the heart rate tracking results. I tested the Galaxy Watch 5 during a total of 20 training sessions. Conclusions: Overall, I am not very impressed with the Galaxy Watch 5. Yes, it is a decent smartwatch, but it doesn’t feel like a major step up from the Watch 4. I will also do a test directly comparing these two watches soon, so stay tuned for that video! Now, the heart rate tracking is actually not too bad on the Galaxy Watch 5, especially for more static exercises. However, the sleep tracking, SpO2 measurements, GPS tracking and step counting all seem to be mediocre at best. It is disappointing to see that at this stage the Galaxy Watch 5 does not show any improvements in sleep stage tracking compared to the Watch 4, which is something I was hoping for after Samsung’s announcement. So, if you are a Samsung user, and you mainly want to use the Watch for the Smartwatch features, it is a decent watch. However, I cannot really recommend it from a health and sports tracking perspective for now, though future software updates might change that.
