Over the next forty-three years, author Ishtiaq Ahmed wrote 796 novels in the series, building one of the most widely read bodies of fiction in South Asia, with more than 50 million copies in print. At its centre is a detective who solves cases through observation rather than force, and a family who solve them with him: Mehmood, Farooq and Farzana. The books shaped a generation of readers across Pakistan and the wider Urdu-speaking world. Ishtiaq Ahmed passed away in November 2015.
