11 Simple tips for Dry Skin (American Academy of Dermatology)

Learn how to fix dry skin for good! Dry skin is a common disorder that most people experience at some point in their lives. It can lead to a lot of problems like wrinkles, premature aging itching & eczema. In this video, I'm going to show you 11 simple tips for prevention of dry skin which are recommended by American academy of dermatology. Here are the details- 1. Limit yourself to a single 5-minute bath or shower every day. Bathing more frequently than that, you risk removing much of the skin's oily layer and causing it to dry out. 2. Use lukewarm water rather than hot water. Hot water removes your skin's natural oils more quickly than lukewarm water. 3. Use less soap. Soaps contain sodium lauryl sulphate (SLS), which helps break down oil and grease. Skin has an oily barrier that protects it from drying out, and since SLS dissolves oils, soap can lead to severely dry skin with each use. 4. If necessary, use moisturising soaps like Dove, Olay, and Basis, or soap-free cleansers like Cetaphil, Cerave and Aquanil. 5. When towelling dry, do not rub the skin. Blot or pat dry so there is still some moisture left on the skin. Avoid bath sponges, scrub brushes, and washcloths. 6. Apply moisturizer immediately after bathing. This helps plug the spaces between your skin cells and seal in moisture while your skin is still damp. If you have severely dry skin, apply an oil to the still moist skin, then apply a moisturizing cream. 7. When treating dry skin, creams and ointments are better than lotions. The reason for this is that they contain more oil than lotions. Look for a cream or ointment that contains one or more of the following ingredients: Jojoba oil, Dimethicone, Glycerine, Lanolin, Mineral oil, Petrolatum, Shea butter. 8. Use sunscreen in the winter as well. Winter's shorter days and less sunlight may convince you to skip sunscreen, but beware. Even in the winter, UV rays can damage your skin's moisture barrier, which is essential for skin health and hydration. 9. Avoid using standard detergents to wash your garments. Look for detergents formulated for sensitive skin and are free of harsh chemicals and scents. 10. During the winter, use a humidifier to keep the air moist. Set it to around 60%, a level that should be sufficient to replenish the top layer of your skin. 11. Staying well hydrated is another important element in keeping your skin healthy and radiant. Inadequate hydration can alter the appearance of your skin and make it more prone to drying out Take care. Dr Vikram Varma Jampana MD
