J. W. Parson Price was a composer and hymn writer who lived from 1839 to 1918. He is known for composing several hymn tunes, most notably the tune "RHAD RAS". Price was a significant figure in Welsh-American music, having been an early teacher of the prominent Welsh composer Daniel Protheroe in the United States. His compositions include vocal works such as "Hiraeth" and "Hydref," and his hymn tunes were published in various Welsh and English hymnals, including Welsh and English Hymns and Anthems and Cân a Mawl. His work has been noted as influential in Welsh music circles, and he has several works and arrangements listed in the Library of Congress archives. More here from Ann Swindale = many thanks Ann! Tune 445 in Caneuon Ffydd. The title means "Free grace". I have never heard it as far as I know. In my grandmother's book the words are attributed to David Charles (1762 - 1834), brother of Thomas Charles Bala (famous for founding the Bible Society after the Mary Jones story) However, Caneuon Ffydd gives the words as translated by Charles from a hymn by Richard Burdsall
