Can't Help Falling in Love (Elvis Presley cover) by Kyle Knapp 10/3/2020

Recorded at Dry Creek Studio during the COVID19 isolation season, for my "Song of the Day" series Song for the day: 10-3-2020 Can't Help Falling in Love, written by Hugo Peretti, Luigi Creatore, and George David Weiss Going back to 1961, when this song, recorded by Elvis Presley for his Blue Hawaii album, topped the charts. The music is supposedly based on a love ballad called Plaisir d'amour, composed nearly 200 years earlier, but it doesn't really sound like the same melody at all to me. I've also read that "Can't Help Falling in Love" was originally written to be sung by a woman, as "Can't Help Falling in Love with Him" (which would have rhymed "him" with "in" and "sin" in the first verse). The song has been widely covered, by artists as diverse as Andy Williams, Tommy Smothers, Bob Dylan, Ingrid Michaelson, The Stylistics, and Englebert Humperdinck. Personally, I've never really been a fan of "the King", but I learned this song a year or so ago for a special occasion. I was hired to perform for a birthday party for a woman who, I was told, was familiar with my repertoire and loved the kinds of songs I was accustomed to singing. Only after I accepted the gig (and cashed the deposit check) was I told that it was critical that I do some Elvis Presley songs, as he was the honoree's favorite. (I quickly taught myself this song and "Don't Be Cruel" - the birthday girl was very pleased!) Here's to falling in love... . . .
