Infants between six and fifteen months old are most commonly affected. Causes Otitis media can occur as a result of: Cold Sore throat Respiratory infection Infection and inflammation can block the Eustachian Tube. This prevents normal drainage of fluid from the middle ear causing a build up of fluid behind the eardrum. It allows for the growth of bacteria and viruses in the ear. An enlarged adenoid can also block the Eustachian tube. There are several types of middle ear infection Acute Otitis Media (AOM): This type of ear infection comes on relatively suddenly and the middle ear becomes swollen and red. Fluid and mucus are trapped inside, causing fever, ear pain and hearing loss. Otitis media with effusion (OME): The infection subsides, but fluid(effusion) and mucus continue to collect in the middle ear. There is a feeling of fullness in the ear and hearing loss. Chronic otitis media with effusion (COME): With this condition, the infection clears up but fluid either stays in the middle ear or returns again and again . As a result, the child may have hearing loss and difficulty fighting new infections Risk Factors Exposure to Smoking Family History A weak immune system Absence of breastfeeding Having a cold Bottle-fed while lying flat Down Syndrome Cleft Palate Symptoms Ear pain Fever Unusual Irritability Difficulty Sleeping Tugging or pulling at one or both ears Fluid drainage from ear Loss of Balance Hearing difficulty Treatment Otitis media usually resolves on its own in 1-2 weeks Treatment options may include Antibiotics Pain medications Surgical options include Myringotomy Adenoidectomy *************************************************************************** TimeStamps 0:00 Introduction to Middle Ear Infection (Otitis Media) 0:21 Causes of Middle Ear Infection (Otitis Media) 0:58 Types of Middle Ear Infection (Otitis Media) 1:43 Risk factors of Middle Ear Infection (Otitis Media) 1:53 Symptoms of Middle Ear Infection (Otitis Media) 2:03 Treatment of Middle Ear Infection (Otitis Media) 2:17 Surgical options of Middle Ear Infection (Otitis Media) *************************************************************************** Watch this 3D video to know all about Ear Infection (Otitis Media), its Symptoms, Causes, Types, Risk Factors, and Treatment Options. *************************************************************************** Get credible information on various health topics follow us on: Instagram:   / eremedium   Facebook:   / eremedium   LinkedIn:   / 13197441   Twitter:   / eremedium   *************************************************************************** Disclaimer: Eremedium videos are for informational purposes only and should not be construed as advice or as a substitute for consulting a physician.
