(12 Jan 2007) HEADLINE: Reports: Withdrawal of British troops from Iraq CAPTION: As President Bush calls for an increase in U.S. troops in Iraq, there are reports the British will pull out thousands of troops from southern Iraq. (Jan. 11) 2007 [Notes:ANCHOR VOICE] SOT: We are all alone on this!... We are all alone. Calirornia Senator Barbara Boxer minced no words Thursday about her reservations of a proposed U.S. Troop increase in Iraq -- SOT: Boxer :there's no one else standing with us in this escalation. At issue for Boxer, reports that the British -- the main White House ally in the Iraq war, would begin a major withdrawl of troops from Iraq, just as President Bush pushed for a troop surge. SOT:Boxer: Have you seen the recent news that the British will be bringing home thousands of troops in the near future. SOT: Rice; I have seen the stories about what the British are going to do, I will wait for a confirmation from the British government about what they're going to do. Britain has about 7-thousand troops in Iraq -most are in the southern city of Basra -- which sees far less violence than other parts of the country. The Daily Telegraph reports 3-thousand of those troops will return home by May. British Prime Minister Tony Blair says he supports the U.S. Troop increase -- but also says the situation is different for the British. SOT: Well, we've always been saying that once the Iraqis are capable of handling their own security in Basra, then it's right that we go to a support role. Now at the moment we're doing this operation there in different conditions from Baghdad, Bush may need Blair's verbal support. A new AP-IPSOs poll shows President Bush's approval rating at home has fallen to a new all-time low, with just 32-percent of Americans approving of the way he's doing his job -- STORYLINE Find out more about AP Archive: http://www.aparchive.com/HowWeWork Twitter:   / ap_archive   Facebook:   / aparchives    Instagram:   / apnews   You can license this story through AP Archive: http://www.aparchive.com/metadata/you...
