Liturgy of the Word - The Beheading of John the Baptist - 29 August 2020

There is a clear distinction between wisdom and foolishness, truth and falsehood, self-sacrifice and self-indulgence. John the Baptist is the perfect model of what the former half of these pairs looks like, while Herod and his household demonstrate the latter. John fearlessly spoke God’s word, even when it was inconvenient and dangerous, and it ultimately cost him his head. In contrast, Herodias was willing to commit murder for the sake of expedience – to permanently remove the bearer of an inconvenient truth.
