#stvincentdepaul #svp #cjicyspicy St. Vincent de Paul (born April 24, 1581 – died September 27, 1660) was a French Catholic priest known for helping the poor and for improving the training of priests. He was made a saint in 1737, and his feast day is celebrated on September 27. He was ordained priest in 1600. According to some sources, after being captured by pirates and enslaved for a short time, he escaped and continued his religious work in Paris. In 1625, he founded the Congregation of the Mission (also called the Vincentians or Lazarists) to preach and train priests. He also started the Confraternities of Charity, groups of wealthy laywomen who cared for the sick and poor. With St. Louise de Marillac, he founded the Daughters of Charity in 1633, the first group of women in religious life who worked outside of convents to help those in need. St. Vincent is remembered as the patron saint of charitable societies. Inspired by his work, the Society of St. Vincent de Paul, a Catholic group helping the poor, was started in 1833 by Antoine Frédéric Ozanam.
