East Ukraine Insurgency: Ukrainian army in fresh Slovyansk clashes with Kremlin-backed insurgents
A military operation to oust armed separatists has been launched around Slovyansk and Kramatorsk in eastern Ukraine. Both towns have been strongholds of Kremlin-backed rebels since unrest broke out in the region some two months ago. Witnesses say heavy fighting has taken place with armoured vehicles and military aircraft deployed, whilst several large blasts have been heard amid periodic volleys of gunfire.
