Man gets kidney donor after Facebook campaign

HARRISON, Ohio (WKRC) - Rich Curl and his family have more than one reason to celebrate this holiday season. Curl has been looking for a kidney donor and he found out just before Christmas that a woman was a match. "You can't get any better than that. You really can't," Curl said. Local 12 News introduced people to Rich Curl and his family last June. His daughters, Liz and Katie, had set up the Facebook page "Donor for Dad" to spread the word about Rich's need for a donor. "Knowing that I personally couldn't be tested since my son only has one kidney and may need one later in life, I felt like this was the way that I could help and contribute," Davis said. Several people responded to Rich's story and agreed to be tested including his daughter, Katie. She was the fourth-best match. "Our first two matches didn't work out. One of them we found out only had one kidney," Curl said. Then the day before Christmas Eve the Curls received a long-awaited phone call from Christ Hospital. Match number three was a go. "She said 'Rich, are you doing anything January 10th?' And he said 'No." And she said 'That's good because we have a kidney I think,' and we were happy," Rich's wife, Julie recalled. The Curls posted the happy news on "Donor for Dad" on Christmas Eve saying they know which present is their favorite this year. "This is your life. You really can't get much better news than that," Curl said. Curl will undergo testing January 3, and his surgery is scheduled for January 10. Curl said he knows who his donor is but she wants to remain anonymous to the public.
