Retro 2005 - Toon Disney Promos 3 - Little Mermaid, January - Cable TV History

A set of promos from Toon Disney that aired during an episode of The Little Mermaid in January of 2005. Commentary: "We just watched a set of promos from Toon Disney that aired during an episode of The Little Mermaid in January of 2005. Included were promos for The Proud Family, Next on Toon Disney and W.I.T.C.H on Jetix. Also included was the intro and end credits for The Little Mermaid and a few scenes. This video is another example of how Toon Disney presented it's animated series in early 2005. In this case the show is The Little Mermaid, an animated series set before the events of the movie of the same name. The series is officially listed as the third spinoff series based on one of Disney's animated films, but there is some debate over that. The other two on the list before it were The New Adventures of Winnie the Pooh and TaleSpin. While you could say The New Adventures of Winnie the Pooh was based on the movie, I think it's a stretch to say TaleSpin was based on The Jungle Book. Baloo didn't wear clothes in that film and didn't fly a plane either. In my book The Little Mermaid series is the second spinoff series directly based on one of Disney's animated films. It originally ran in the early 1990s during CBS's Saturday morning block of cartoons. At the time Disney was already enjoying success in syndication with their Disney Afternoon package that had cartoons like DuckTales, TailSpin and Goof Troop. But The Little Mermaid series marked their return to network television. It started a trend that continued with other shows. Shows like The Little Mermaid: The Series, Timon & Pumbaa and Aladdin: The Series first aired on CBS then ran concurrently in syndication on the Disney Afternoon. You have to admire how smart Disney was in using this strategy. Basically they were having CBS pay for the production of the these shows, then they got to include them in their Disney Afternoon package at little or no cost to them. At that point most of the revenues were pure profit. Where are the creative business strategies like this today at Disney? With these promos we saw again how Disney shared a lot of their properties between The Disney Channel and Toon Disney in early 2005. Shows like The Proud Family and The Little Mermaid aired on both channels. This is also the first video in this series with a promo for a show from the channel's Jetix programming block. The promo is for a show called W.I.T.C.H. The Jetix block catered to young boys and featured shows like Power Rangers and superheroes from Marvel and DC but here we see a promo for a decidedly female themed show. And that's no surprise. If you noticed all the promos and bumpers featured in this video are targeted toward a female audience. That makes sense since they aired during an episode of The Little Mermaid. I included some scenes from The Little Mermaid series because I wanted to give you a feel for the show. As far as my opinion of the series goes, I think it had some good episodes. But it also had some weak episodes that feel a lot like cheezy Saturday morning cartoon animation. For me, it's a mixed bag. I like how they expanded the world of The Little Mermaid, but some of the characters look like they were drawn by the same animators who did The Smurfs. And some of the people who worked on The Smurfs did in fact work on this show. Well those are my comments for this video. If you like these retro videos please subscribe.
