If your thoughts start to wander, gently return your attention to the bell’s sound or the music. In meditation, it’s not about whether you succeed or fail. What’s important is to simply keep bringing your focus back when it drifts. If it drifts away multiple times, bring it back multiple times. There is growth and realization in persevering and practicing without giving up. Words from Oni-Osho (The Demon Monk): Become strong at heart. Many people who seek my counsel lament their own weakness and say they want to have a stronger heart. They may say they are afraid to meet others, that they lose confidence when someone says something to them, or that they are scared of people and the outside world, which prevents them from leaving their rooms. They suffer from their perceived weakness and seek advice on how to strengthen their hearts. A strong heart is one that recognizes its own weakness. If you avert your eyes from your weakness, you will not become stronger. Trying to escape from your own weakness and relying on some other concept to feel strong won’t work. Even if a concept seems effective at first, it will lose its effect over time. This is because if your true inner state remains weak, merely believing you are strong won’t bring real change. It’s like placing a piece of cloth over a wound on your body. Initially, the cloth might hide the bleeding and the injury, but eventually, the blood will seep through, and the wound will remain unhealed. The cloth does not help the wound recover. Instead, it’s better to fully identify where the wound is and understand the extent of the injury, then take proper care of it. That way, the wound will heal quickly. The same principle applies to the heart. If you hide your weakness and keep telling yourself you are strong, you will remain weak. In fact, pretending to be someone you’re not can make you even weaker. Even if you practice meditation to achieve an unshakable mind, it won’t make your heart strong. It will only make your weak heart more rigid. The unshakable mind is not a cure-all. Rather, by acknowledging and observing the root cause of your weakness, the weakness itself will diminish. The process of caring for your heart involves both examining and healing it simultaneously. When you carefully observe your own weakness in detail, that act of observation alone can reduce it. Face the aspects of your heart that you have been avoiding, and look at them sincerely. Where does your weakness come from? When does it surface? In what situations do you feel weak? Observe these questions thoroughly. Then, investigate the cause. Once you discover the cause, observe how your heart feels weak when that cause is present in your thoughts and how it feels stronger when it’s absent. By doing this, your inner weakness will start to disappear. As your weakness vanishes, one by one, your heart will gradually grow stronger. You will no longer fear people, and what once frightened you about the outside world will cease to scare you.
